Forefathers Burying Ground

Intersection of Westford Street and Littleton Road

The Forefathers Burying Ground (established 1655) is one of the oldest cemeteries in the Merrimack Valley. Many of Chelmsford’s founders were buried here, as well as other important figures in Chelmsford’s history. Chelmsford’s first midwife, Grace Livermoar, was the first burial with an inscription on the gravestone in 1690. Joseph Warren, who fired the Minute Gun in 1775 to call Chelmsford Minute Men to march to Lexington and Concord, is buried here, as well as Joseph Spaulding, who some credit with firing the first shot on the Battle of Bunker Hill.
