The Chelmsford patriots would meet here. They used a hole in a nearby tree to stash

money for guns. The monument was built to honor the people who died in the Revolutionary War. Two men honored here were John Bates and Noah Foster, among many others.

Chelmsford's motto was, "Let the children guard what the sires have won".
