Beechtree Bench
Town Common
This bench was made from a beechtree planted by school children in 1891. The tree stood for 120 years before being in “imminent danger of failure”. It was cut down in November of 2015. Before it was fully chopped down, 20 saplings were taken to be grown at a Rhode Island nursery and will eventually be planted back in Chelmsford. Slabs from the tree were donated to McCarthy and Parker (Chelmsford's middle schools), to
the library, and are being sold to the public. The tree’s trunk was originally planned to be a statue but it was too pricy so the trunk was removed, carved into a bench by Justin Gordon, and then put back in its rightful place.
